Ridge Rattan is a family owned business started by Charles and Elisa Quatela in 1965. It began with a small store front on Ridge Road East and the factory right behind it where everything was manufactured on the premises. In 1984 they moved to a 30,000 square foot facility on Dewey Avenue and expanded their store on East Ridge Road. Now, two of the three children have joined them in management. Ridge Rattan is the largest manufacturer of rattan furniture in Upstate New York. To assure our customers of high quality, we manufacture our own furniture, which allows us to accommodate special requests and needs, producing high quality furniture in a variety of styles and finishes. We finish most of our furniture right here in Rochester to achieve the highest quality and consistency. Our upholstery department uses only premium cushions and filling materials for both indoor and outdoor furniture. We place considerable emphasis on all our furniture. We use wood to frame the seats of our living room sets. The nylon webbing we attach to the frame, gives the seats lasting comfort. We have a wide selection of indoor and out door fabrics, and we also make custom replacement cushions for rattan and wicker sets. |
What is Rattan? |

Rattan is among the oldest natural furniture material in use today. Unlike bamboo, which is hollow, rattan is a solid timber vine that grows in the jungles of the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. |

What is Wicker? |
|
Wicker is a weaving process, not a material. One of the materials used in the weaving process is called rattancore, which comes from the rattan interior. A machine cuts the inside of the rattan pole, into pieces small enough in diameter for the weaving. Due to the nature of this product, splits and discolorations in the rattan poles are to be expected. They even enhance the beauty and uniqueness of these handcrafted products. |
| How is the Furniture Constructed? |

Imported as straight poles, the rattan is placed in a steam box which is necessary for bending the rattan and making it more pliable. Jigs are constructed for producing specific shapes. When the rattan is steaming hot, it is bent to fit into the jig. Once cooled, the rattan will remain in that shape. The shaped poles are assembled with straight poles that are contoured to fit joints evenly. Our furniture is constructed only with quality hardware. The joints where the two pieces meet are wrapped cheifly with leather bindings. Leather enhances the furniture, giving it more elegance, and adding to the durability of the furniture. |
| How is the Furniture Finished? |

Once the furniture is complete, combinations of latex and alcohol base stains are used to obtain a homogeneous finish. Painstaking detail is used to prepare and sand each piece for a clean, smooth surface. Unlike most local companies, we finish most of our furniture right here in Rochester to assure the highest quality and consistency in our finish. |
| What About Cushions? |

Our upholstery department only uses premium cushions and filling materials. The seat cushions are constructed of polyurethane core foam wrapped with layered Dacron fiber. Our back cushions are filled with soft Dacron. Cushion covers can be removed, making it possible to wash them. |
